Self-Care: It’s Ok to Root for You

“You cannot go back to move ahead.”

Often times we criticize and chastise ourselves for self-perceived mistakes and decisions that, while we are progressing past them, we verbally and mentally beat ourselves into never forgetting where we’ve been. Instead of being our own cheerleaders, understanding that we are allowed to fuck up, we beat ourselves to the finish line like some race horse, inflicting pain upon ourselves to achieve a desired result.

You can’t stand in the sun while complaining about a storm you are no longer in. At that point, you become your own dark cloud and you will never escape the darkness if you simply don’t step into your own light.

Coming from a place of deep depression, and beating myself up about the decisions I could have made even though I was out of the storm, kept me stuck. Making a conscious decision to praise myself, recognizing that I cannot go back and change anything, has allowed me to progress emotionally and mentally through current trials I experience today. You can’t control others bringing up your past or your mistakes but you can stop beating your own ass and recognize that you are your most important supporter. You are nothing to anyone if you can’t even be everything to yourself.
